“Oh L’Amour!” 2016 Valentine’s Day Bonbon Collection
My inspiration usually comes from the inside out and all the detailed elements reflect that. However, for this year’s Valentine’s Day collection I had a lot of elements I really felt I needed to incorporate and had to figure out how to tie them all together into something inspiring.
I started collecting elements to build my inspiration board. This is something I do not every time, but sometimes. The more I started collecting the more my vision came together. It congealed very easily once I started.
I love the photographic artistry of David LaChappelle. He is known internationally for his unique hyper-realistic aesthetic and the vastness of humanity that he would incorporate into his image of the world. I challenged myself to bring that feeling into this year’s Valentine’s Day bonbon collection. It reminds me of his photographs with its beautiful color and boldness.
What to name the collection? It looks very French to me, but I had a hard time finding a name that really fit the boldness of what I wanted to create. I love the way that things come to you when you least expect it. The way that you’re inspired by what’s around you. While flipping through radio stations and contemplating the perfect name, Erasure is playing and I see that word, Oh L’Amour!, and I realize “Oh my gosh that’s it!” Bold, French and screams Valentine’s Day. Done!
It all came together very very quickly and easily and I knew I was on the right path. This year’s collection has bold bright color. Hot pinks, light pinks, lipstick reds, black and white details that marry beautiful in this bold, yet decidedly feminine collection.
The flavors also reflect those same qualities. We have some Valentine’s Day favorites with (my favorite!) Veuve Clicquot Champagne, Passion Fruit and Hazelnut Carmelized Honey ganaches. While other ones are a little bit more “outside the box” such as Spiced Cinnamon Tomato- a Vietnamese cinnamon ganache with a tomato bourbon conserve or Blackberry Violette- a blackberry ganache with Creme de Violette liqueur and a blackberry violet pate de fruit. A flavor that comes back every year at this time, Spicy Serrano- a milk chocolate ganache infused with spicy Serrano chiles.
All these flavors marry well with the design and contribute in composing this year’s “Oh L’Amour!” bonbon collection. I hope you enjoy giving them and eating them as much as I enjoyed creating them!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
